【What is Syphilis?】

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a bacterium called Treponema pallidum.

It can cause a wide range of symptoms throughout the body, and if left untreated, it may lead to serious health complications.

Syphilis progresses through four stages:

Primary Stage (Early Symptomatic Syphilis - Stage I)

Starts about 3 weeks after infection

A painless, hard sore (chancre) appears at the site of infection

The sore may develop into an ulcer

Swelling of nearby lymph nodes

Symptoms disappear naturally within 3 to 6 weeks

Without treatment, the infection progresses to the next stage

Secondary Stage (Early Symptomatic Syphilis - Stage II)

Begins 4 to 10 weeks after the primary stage symptoms

Various symptoms appear throughout the body

Characteristic rashes, known as "roseola," may appear on the palms, soles, and body

Other symptoms include fever, fatigue, headache, and swollen lymph nodes

Symptoms may resolve on their own, but the infection persists

Tertiary Stage (Late Symptomatic Syphilis)

Occurs 3 to 10 years after the initial infection

Tumor-like growths called gummas may form on the skin, bones, muscles, or internal organs

Gummas can destroy surrounding tissues

May cause nasal deformities (saddle nose)

Quaternary Stage (Late-Stage Syphilis)

Cardiovascular complications (such as aortic aneurysm or rupture)

Nervous system complications (neurosyphilis)

Without proper treatment, it can be fatal

Early detection and appropriate antibiotic treatment are essential for syphilis.
